APRIL MonSFFA Meeting: SUPERHEROES!

MonSFFA’s April 14 Meeting is all about SUPERHEROES! So wear your favourite champion’s logo on your T-shirt, hat, or even underwear! (We’ll take your word for it!)

In keeping with the meeting’s theme, our Saturday Sci-Fi Cinema Matinée this month offers five superhero movies from which to choose! Early-birds will collectively choose one to be reviewed! We begin at noon sharp!

The movies are:

WONDER WOMAN (1975): The TV movie that launched Lynda Carter’s 1970s Wonder Woman series! We imagine it must be somewhat embarrassing to be fighting for our rights in those satin tights, so show the girl some respect, please, people!

SUPERMAN AND THE MOLE-MEN (1951): The first theatrical feature to star Superman, played here by George Reeves! The film was trimmed and recycled as a two-part episode of Reeves’ later Adventures of Superman TV show.

Here’s how devoted I am to getting this on track: Feb. 4th was my last day of a month-long Writing Challenge on Medium (more on that later), and now that I’m finished, I started this newsletter in earnest.

I said the last issue that I wanted to get this list back on track, and I meant it. Now to produce it quicker.

Welcome to new readers, and welcome back to returning ones.

Voice (Not the TV Show)

I’ve heard this term mentioned a lot lately. It’s something that all writers work to achieve in their writing. Some writers achieve theirs quickly, some take longer. I *hope* that I’ve found mine; readers will tell me if I haven’t.

At its base, achieving a voice means that when a reader sees your words, they can recognize the uniqueness in them. I read examples from Neil Stephenson and Nalo Hopkinson, but I first noticed them in the words from Mark Twain.

Note that I’m not talking about style. That’s a separate thing. I notice a different style in the words written by Spider Robinson (called a literary descendant of Robert Heinlein), but his voice in his text is a different thing altogether.

The challenge that I see is for a writer to vary their voice between different series so that they don’t end up sounding the same — but that’s where the difference between style and voice come into play… and the skill of the writer in question.

How’m I Doin’?
Newsletter Plugin for WordPress

I’m trying this out now. The notion is that I could run my mailing list and newsletter directly through my blog. I would no longer deal with hosting fees separate from it.

It doesn’t seem likely that I’ll do that, as it doesn’t seem to have capabilities for HTML newsletters yet… maybe a future version will.

Writing Challenge

I took part in a month-long competition on Medium. It helped to reconstruct my habit to write daily. As a result, I also have many more entries to share on that platform.

One other benefit: I worked on my writing ‘voice’. You can read all of my posts and immediately tell that I was the author. There’s always room for improvement, but readers could always know that I wrote it, and I came up with original, non-cliche examples. This is good! I’m not Mark Twain, but if I get to be even a fraction of what he achieved, I’ll be happy.

One negative: my viewing stats shot up during the month. They’re now dropping at a big rate.

I’m Back in RPG Writing

I contacted my former publisher recently. I was working on a project with him years ago, but other forces made me vanish. I’m back now to complete the project.

This will give me the funds I need to get my novel edited and to pay a cover artist.

Short Story

Now that the Challenge is over I’m back to Ninja Writing the story.

Obituary for Christopher Chartier

Montreal’s fandom will remember Chris Chartier, founder of Warp 9, a media oriented fan club in Montreal.  He ran a couple of conventions, and got many of us involved in the concom. He also got me travelling to Chicago for Visions, still in my memory as the best conventions ever.  It’s a shock that he passed away so young, only 52.    –CPL 

Took his last valiant breath surrounded by family at the West Island Palliative Center. He will be deeply missed by his beloved wife Jennifer(Brown), his children Ryan and Autumn. He leaves behind his parents Angelina and Antonio Filigno, his grandfather Antonio (the late Maria), his sister Lisa (George), brother Marcus (Julia). As well as his In-laws Jean and David Brown, Stephen (Anita), his nieces and nephews Alexandra, Mikaela Peter, Maya, Joshua,Justin and Allison. He will be missed greatly by all his Aunts and Uncles and many family members and friends.

The general rule in horror movies is that things always get very quiet before something horrible happens. So how does it work if it’s quiet all the time?

It works magnificently in A Quiet Place, directed by John Krasinski and starring him and his wife, Emily Blunt. They play a married couple living in a postapocalyptic world that has one rule to keep you alive: Shhh.

We’re thrown into things on “Day 89,” the onscreen title tells us, and left to piece together what’s going on. But the screenplay, by Krasinski and horror writers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, never leaves us in the dark for long.

It’s immediately obvious that the family has to be quiet. The reason why comes in the form of a headline screaming from what I’m guessing was the final edition of The New York Post. And a possible way out tiptoes into the picture about halfway through its 90 minutes, making you want to shout at the screen for the characters to notice it too. But shouting would be unwise.

There’s also some delicious tension. Early in the film, a pair of AA batteries signals a catastrophe waiting to happen. Later, a rusty nail will loom larger than the snow globe in Citizen Kane, or the Maltese falcon in that other old movie.

After the opening credits, we’re suddenly a year and a bit later: Day 472 if you’re keeping score. The family — I don’t think we ever hear their names — is living on a farm, where they grow corn (the silent grain?) and play Monopoly with fuzzy felt tokens. (So many other games are out — Trouble, Uno, Boggle, Operation, KerPlunk.) Communication is aided by the fact that the daughter (Millicent Simmonds) is deaf, so everyone knows sign language.

But the family is about to get bigger. Blunt’s character is clearly pregnant and, regardless of what you may have heard, newborns are notoriously noisy, as is the act of having them.

This seems a good place to mention the monsters. No one knows where they came from, but they clearly have some DNA from Ridley Scott’s Alien, although that’s true of almost every beast of the past 40 years. They’re leggier with heads like overripe melons. And they can hear better than your kids in the next bedroom. Scary, I know.

Family-affair movies can feel like vanity projects — see Guy Ritchie’s Swept Away, or Will and Jaden Smith in After Earth — but about the worst you can say about this one is: Great chemistry between the leads? Well of course: They’ve had 10 years and two children together to build it!

There are some lovely moments as well between Simmonds and her movie brother (Noah Jupe), one of whom is carrying a load of guilt on tiny shoulders. Let’s hope they know how to suffer in silence.

And the film is a technical triumph, too. Cinematography is by Denmark’s Charlotte Bruus Christensen, who knows exactly how to direct your gaze to where it’s needed — unless, like me, you are watching much of the movie through spread fingers. And Marco Beltrami’s score is not only beautiful but essential in a film with so little spoken dialogue.

Finally, let us turn back to Krasinski, who doesn’t just direct the film — he conducts it. A Quiet Place joins Get Out, It Follows, The Babadook and The Cabin in the Woods as one of the great horror movies of the past decade. It’s one of the best “silent movies” of the past hundred years. And it has such a fantastic ending that I wanted to dive back in just to experience again the way it sneaks up on us. Silently. Of course.
