Meeting re-caps

MonSFFA meeting on the 19th of January

The meeting of January 19th was sparsely attended, possibly due to the cold and the storm predicted to hit us in the evening. Folks arrived so bundled up, we couldn’t recognize them until they stripped off the hats, mittens, scarves, and in one case, a ski-mask.

We started with the election which returned the usual suspect to office:

  • Vice-President: Keith Braithwaite
  • Treasurer: Sylvain St-Pierre

Danny Sichel was first at bat for the new year! We played the game that is sort of Balderdash. ( If you missed it, you can review the general rules of the game as played at an earlier MonSFFA meeting here.) There was much laughter as we tried to guess the plots of stories with very misleading titles. Sometimes the real plot was sillier than our imagined ideas!

After this, we worked on programming ideas for the year. Both Keith and Sylvain had prepared several topics for discussion and we have tentatively slotted the ones we liked best into our calendar. there are still a few open slots, so if there is something you want to present to the group, let us know. <president@monsffa.ca>.

There was a lot of plastic on display as Dom Durocher had brought in some of his model kits, including a very large Klingon ship. Cathy is twisting his arm to review model kits either in WARP or at meetings.

Supper was at Hurley’s Pub on Mark Burakoff‘s recommendation. It seemed to be a good day for an Irish stew! An Irish band was practising in a near corner of the pub, greatly adding to the cozy Celtic atmosphere.

Scott Lynch’s GENTLEMAN BASTARD series optioned for film

With 3 books published, I thought I might give this series a try, but after reading the first in the series, I remain undecided about its merits. It’s hard to care about a gang of foul-mouthed thugs, for one thing. Their leader, the POV character, Locke Lamora himself, is by any definition a psychopath. In fact, there is absolutely no one in this degenerate city anyone sane could find even remotely likeable.

There is a lot of exposition, much of it through flash-backs. Because the book actually begins with a flash-back, the jumps forward and backward were confusing until I got the time line unravelled.

OTOH, I wonder what happens to the survivors of the gang warfare? Is it worth the $$ to find out? The basic plot of “Lies” is intriguing, once you scrape off all the dirt.

Late last year, astronomers announced that they’d found a super-Earth around Barnard’s star – one of the closest suns to our own. The discovery of a planet just six light-years away was enough to excite astronomers and the public alike. However, the researchers who found the planet said that they suspected the icy world couldn’t support life.

But now, a group of astronomers are saying such pessimism may be premature. On Earth, geothermal vents produce heat and create unique environments where life thrives in places otherwise difficult to eke out a living – like the frigid, dark deep of the oceans. The team says similar processes could be at work on this world, which is officially cataloged as Barnard b.

Barnard’s star is a low-mass red dwarf , which means it’s small, ancient, and only emits a fraction of the energy our sun puts out. The planet itself is about three times the mass of Earth and orbits the star every 233 days. So, because of its distant orbit around a tiny star, the planet should be a pretty frigid place where water would freeze on the surface.

But what about the water below the surface? On Thursday morning at the 233rd Meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Seattle, Washington, a team of astronomers rekindling the planet’s potential for habitability. They said that if the world also has a large iron/nickel core and enough geothermal activity, features such as volcanic plumes and vents could create “life zones” of liquid water under the world’s frozen surface.
