It’s even harder to destroy asteroids than we thought

New research shows smacking an asteroid may fracture but not shatter it.

You’ve likely heard by now that the movie Armageddon got it all wrong — it’s just not feasible to blow up an asteroid heading toward Earth with a bomb or few. But how unfeasible is it, really? New research set for publication March 15 in the planetary science journal Icarus is sending any hope humanity might have had to nuke an incoming asteroid threat even further into the realm of impossibility. Breaking up asteroids, it turns out, is really, really hard to do.
AsteroidBreakup
Smacking an asteroid with a bomb or a smaller asteroid should shatter it into manageable pieces, right? Wrong, a new study shows – this picture isn’t likely after a minor collision.NASA/JPL-Caltech

The new study, led by recent Ph.D. graduate Charles El Mir from the Johns Hopkins University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, makes use of both recent advancements in understanding about the way rock fractures, as well as improved computer code to model what happens when you smack an asteroid with something big. “Our question was, how much energy does it take to actually destroy an asteroid and break it into pieces?” El Mir said in a press release.

The answer to that question, it turns out, is “that asteroids are stronger than we used to think and require more energy to be completely shattered,” he said.

A two-step process

The simulations run by El Mir and his colleagues allowed them to study the aftermath of an asteroid collision via a “hybrid” approach that focuses on two different stages of a hit using two different types of computer code. They modeled an asteroid 15 miles (25 kilometers) across undergoing a head-on impact from a 0.75-mile-diameter (1.21 km) impactor made of basalt and traveling at 3 miles (5 km) per second.

During the fictitious collision, a material model first showed the short-term fragmentation that took place within the asteroid just after it is struck, a process that occurs within just a fraction of a second. Then, their code handed the calculations over to a different type of model called an N-body model, which showed what happened over the longer term — hours after impact — as the asteroid’s gravity influenced any small pieces that might have flown off during the collision.

Would an asteroid shatter on impact? And what would happen to those pieces over time? Would they fly apart, or would they come back together to re-form the asteroid, nullifying the effects of the impact?

In answer, the team found that no — the asteroid didn’t shatter on impact. Instead, the initial impact causes millions of internal cracks to develop, and the areas nearest the hit actually flowed like sand, allowing a crater to form. But those cracks didn’t destroy the asteroid; instead, they left behind a damaged but intact body that was large enough to pull any smaller pieces that may have flown off back onto itself, essentially completely reassembling the parent body.

This video shows the first phase of the simulated asteroid collision, during which a crater forms and cracks move through the interior of the target.

Johns Hopkins University

During the second phase of the collision, all the fragments that flew off are brought back down to the parent body via gravity, essentially reassembling it, albeit into a different shape and surface composition.

Johns Hopkins University

The results differ significantly from previous studies in the early 2000s, whose code simulated a collision between an identical pair. In that study, the larger body was completely destroyed. But the older code, the researchers say, was not able to take into account the smaller-scale processes occurring on the asteroid during the initial collision. Because cracks propagate through an asteroid with limited speed, the authors say, they aren’t able to shatter an asteroid as easily as previously thought.

More than just movie magic

That’s not the large-scale destruction moviegoers are going for, but it does tell researchers a lot about how collisions between asteroids might have shaped their evolution into the objects they are today. The work also has applications, the researchers say, for future missions to mine material from asteroids. That’s because material thrown off during the collision ended up scattered back over the asteroid’s surface — potentially exposing internal riches for easier access.

By JJ: To assist Hugo nominators, this post provides information on the artists and designers of nearly 500 works which appeared in a professional publication in the field of science fiction or fantasy for the first time in 2018.

These credits have been accumulated during the course of the year, from copyright pages, Acknowledgements sections, and public posts by artists, authors, and publishers, as well as other sources on the internet.

Because it is difficult to provide a list ordered by name when artwork is frequently credited to two or more artists and/or designers, I have uploaded my main spreadsheet with all accumulated data here.

In this post I will display up to 12 images of artworks for each artist for whom I have identified 4 or more works which appeared in a professional publication in the field of science fiction or fantasy for the first time in 2018.

Please note carefully the eligibility criteria according to the WSFS Constitution:

Professional Artist

3.3.12: Best Professional Artist. An illustrator whose work has appeared in a professional publication in the field of science fiction or fantasy during the previous calendar year.

3.2.11: A Professional Publication is one which meets at least one of the following two criteria:
(1) it provided at least a quarter the income of any one person or,
(2) was owned or published by any entity which provided at least a quarter the income of any of its staff and/or owner.

3.10.2: In the Best Professional Artist category, the acceptance should include citations of at least three (3) works first published in the eligible year.

Under the current rules, artwork for semiprozines and fanzines is not eligible in this category. You can check whether a publication is a prozine or a semiprozine in this directory (the semiprozine list is at the top of the page, and the prozine directory is at the bottom).

Please be sure to check the spreadsheet first; but then, if you are able to confirm credits missing 2018-original works and the names of their artists from Acknowledgments sections, copyright pages, or by contacting authors and/or artists, go ahead and add them in comments, and I will get them included in the spreadsheet, and if the artist is credited with at least 4 works, in this post. If you have questions or corrections, please add those also. Please note that works may or may not be added to the list at my discretion.

PLEASE DON’T ADD GUESSES.

Artists, Authors, Editors and Publishers are welcome to post in comments here, or to send their lists to jjfile770 [at] gmail [dot] com.

The following works have been confirmed, to the best of my ability, as having appeared in a professional publication in the field of science fiction or fantasy for the first time in 2018. Clicking on the thumbnail will display a larger version; where possible, the larger version will be the original artwork before cropping and the addition of titles.

New Word Press

Word Press has “upgraded” to a whole new programme. It might turn out to be an improvement, eventually, when the bugs are worked out, and your webmistress figures out where they buried all the formatting tools. It is not at all obvious! For instance, for the post I made this morning, I would normally have just copied and pasted the bits and bobs I thought would interest members. This time I had to create a block for each item, and then find the links for the individual pictures, and add them in image  blocks. This is not reasonable.

I can’t figure out how to put images next to the text. Looks like I have to make tables, as in html.  The add media button is gone.

OK, so that’s my rant for today. If the site looks screwy, or doesn’t get new blog postings for a while, you’ll know why. I’m perusing the forums and fb groups on the subject, but all this takes time which I don’t have a lot of at this time.

And just in time for Christmas…

Sad Con News

Two conventions popular with fans in our region–ie, Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, and part of US, are running into hard times.

SF Contario in Toronto, on hiatus

Arisia is imploding

  • SF Contario has announced a hiatus of at least two years.  The announcement was made on Facebook, but their own website has not been updated in a long time. For the benefit of members who are not on FB, I’ve copied the information from FB below.
  • Arisia is imploding: And this is really sad.  2019 is the 30th year of Boston’s Arisia, but due to serious problems involving sloppy follow ups on security complaints, or possibly even outright cover-ups of incidents, GoH and volunteers are resigning in droves. SF Contario in Toronto, on hiatus–fb message

The Science Fiction and Fantasy Society is sad to announce what is obvious to everyone, that we are unable to hold SFContario 9 this year.

The main issue is money. Two issues affect us.Hotel rental has increased by more than 40% in Toronto since our first event in 2010. Membership numbers were below expectations last year, and we just don’t have cash in the bank to cover deposits this year. We need to recapitalize to come back to the convention scene. A second issue is just personal; some of our core committee have had to deal with a variety of personal distractions preventing us from contributing to the convention as we have in the past; most of these distractions are temporary, but this year has been difficult for some people. A third issue seems to be marketing; while we’ve always had an excellent program, thanks to the brilliant community of authors, creative people, and active fans in our region, and while practically everyone who attends the convention has a great experience with the program and social activities, this message hasn’t gotten out to the wider community as widely as we’d hoped. We’ve had complaints about the hotel, which again goes back to the financial issue (we’ve been in the most affordable location in the downtown area). We would need to take some time to brainstorm better methods of outreach. Finally, we face the issue every convention faces, that fandom has changed. Fandom overall has grown in society, but it has done so partly through high-profile pop culture gatherings, and partly through online channels, such that our traditional format of in-person social gathering is in less demand; this is an issue many small and medium-sized conventions have been facing in recent years.

We also apologize to our community for the delay in announcing this news. We’ve tried for a while to find a workable solution to financial issues. After that, we faced difficulty getting our core committee together at the same time to have a conversation on how to proceed; this discussion really has only begun and we have a lot to work through. We will, on request, reimburse members who have purchased early memberships, or we will roll over purchased memberships to apply to the next event we host (which will likely be at a higher price).

We are taking a hiatus of at least two years as we reorganize and plan for the future. It takes about eighteen months to plan a convention from scratch and we don’t see ourselves getting this sorted out by next spring.

We are starting to think about ways to move forward. We can build on the things we’ve learned and the contacts that we’ve made, but we want to think about how we might to more than be a generic local science fiction convention. We have some good ideas, but we’re just starting to have this conversation. The world has changed in the past couple of years, and some people have new priorities and new responsibilities as the wider society becomes more complicated. Some of these external issues have become distractions, and we are starting to think about ways we can align our non-fannish agendas with our fannish activities.

From electrocuting pickles to hosting the Aurora Awards, we’ve seen and done a lot of amazing and unexpecting things with a lot of wonderful people. This motivates us to keep doing the work of bringing people together. We won’t have formal meetings until plans become more solid, at least until we’re sure we have resources to hold another event, but our committee is easy to find in person and online, and we’re happy for any good ideas people want to share with us.
