Meeting of March 12th, Recap

March 12, 2017 Even our friendly dragon mascot wore green for St Patrick’s Day!

In spite of the return of winter’s cold and the hour change, quite a few showed up for the Sunday Cinema Matinée. The theme was Flying Saucers, and Keith had several excellent movies and one bomb from which to choose.  http://www.monsffa.ca/?p=4565

After watching the trailers, the fans voted for This Island Earth, which was excellent for its time. The female role was largely decorative, the only person of colour was a maid, the science was lacking, but the plot made up for its shortcomings in those areas.

The bomb? Well, that was of course Plan 9 from Outer Space. We have tentatively scheduled a viewing of this so-dreadful-it’s wonderful film for our October meeting.

Sylvain St-Pierre kicked off our main programme with a presentation he entitled “Can Government Get Any Weirder?” Inspired by the election of Donald Trump in the Untied States, this presentation discussed everything from anarchy to totalitarianism in our real world past and present, and in the world of science fiction and fantasy. Examples included books and BDs, in French as well as English, print and  webcomics.  The audience really got into it, cheerfully offering opinions and citing examples of government and bureaucracy gone “weird” or unwieldy.

At the break, MonSFFen enjoyed a variety of snacks, notably cupcakes and green pretzels baked by Lindsay Brown.  We browsed the book exchange, grabbed some freebies which included a bag of astronomy magazines, and admired Dom Durocher’s models.

Among other items, the raffle had a great print of a flying saucer, for which we thank Dom who donated it. There were also programme books from various World Cons to accompany the second part of the meeting which was about conventions, and a stack of Star Log magazines.

Depressive nights would be the biggest curse to couples, especially if they are frequent and due to any sexual dysfunction in the male is a situation when a man is purchase levitra online check content unable to get or maintain a satisfactory erection. There was a special draw for 3 pairs of movie passes to an advanced screening of Life, and two passes to Parks Canada. The latter were donated by Mark Burakoff and Lindsay Brown.

Josée Bellemare models one of her self-designed shirts.

After the break, Sylvain and Cathy led a discussion on the conventions within driving distance of Montreal. Cathy had organized her points according to the various KINDS of con, while Sylvain focussed on SPECIFIC cons, which led to some confusion, but hopefully the fans became more interested in knowing about the conventions in our area, which are listed on our website here.

Maybe it was the full moon, or maybe it was because we only had half an hour left, or maybe it was because Cathy forgot the first rule of teaching grade school (always have a plan B in case the kids get rambunctious) , but the programming workshop went awry very quickly. There were more topics suggested than we have time slots for! Some very interesting topics were left orphaned as no one felt confident enough to take on the role of moderator. There is also a perception that topics need Power Point(or equivalent) presentations, which is not at all the case.  We need to put more effort into explaining how panel discussions work! (I blame Sylvain for raising the bar so high, grin)

After the meeting, 8 of us went off to the Irish Embassy Pub on Bishop Street for an excellent meal, and lively discussions on everything and anything.

Missed the meeting? Members will find more pictures by Cathy and Sylvain as well as a short snip of video here. http://www.monsffa.ca/?page_id=4646

February 12, 2017 meeting

I think we would all agree yesterday’s meeting was one of our best, thanks to our guest speaker Professor Don Donderi, the author of UfOs, ETs And Alien Abductions: A Scientist Looks At The Evidence.

Prof Donderi,  PhD, associate professor (retired), McGill University Department of Psychology, teaches a ten-week course in the McGill Community for Lifelong Learning (MCLL). He was recently interviewed by the Montreal Gazette, you can read it here.

As it turned out, one of our members, Barbara Silverman, had taken this course in the past and was able to personally pass on our invitation to speak to us. And proving that we do live “in a small world, after all”, Don and MonSFFan Joe Aspler have co-written papers, though not about UFOs.

Prof Donderi signs his book for Cathy

Don has a great sense of humour, and quite enjoyed the MonSFFilm, Encounters of the Very Close Kind. His slide presentation was very interesting, covering many documented cases of sightings and abductions. While many of us tend to be skeptics, the subject of UFOs lies close to the SF fan’s heart!  Members have expressed a wish to have him back again for a sequel, possibly to revisit a particular aspect such as the Roswell incident in more depth. Don brought only three copies of his book for sale, leaving some disappointed UFO fans, but it can be ordered from Chapters/Indigo or Amazon.  At the time of this writing, there is one copy at Indigo Place Montréal Trust.

programming ideas for future meetings. It’s not too late to contribute, email <president@monsffa.ca> .  Copies of WARP 97 were distributed. Coincidentally, the cover art features Martian war machines! WARP is available for download here.  If you would like a copy mailed to you, please contact Keith <veep@monsffa.ca>  The raffle prizes featured a lot of chocolate in honour of St. Valentine’s Day, and a few members remembered to wear red.

Keith moderated a discussion on future economics. What is technology doing to our workplace? Are robots going to make us obsolete?  Some members argued that business is already pushing human workers out of entry level jobs –even McDonald’s!– so robots are in fact just another way for business owners to enrich themselves at the expense of others.  While having machines do all the work sounds idyllic, some of us need to feel we are contributing to our society. We can’t all be great philosophers!

A snow storm was brewing, which sent some members home early, but five us trudged through blowing snow to the Irish Embassy for good food  by a warm fire.

Members will find many more photos of our Feb 2017 meeting on our website.

Gene Cernan, last man to walk on Moon, dies aged 82

US astronaut Gene Cernan – the last man to walk on the Moon – has died aged 82.

America’s space agency Nasa said it was “saddened by the loss” of the retired spaceman.

Captain Cernan was one of only three people to go to the Moon twice and the last man to leave a footprint on the lunar surface in 1972.

The final words he spoke there were: “We leave as we came and, God willing, as we shall return with peace and hope for all mankind.”

He was the commander of the Apollo 17 mission at the time.

Twelve people have walked on the Moon, and only six of them are still alive today.

Apollo 17: Pictures, video, facts

Mark Craig, director of Last Man on the Moon, reflects on Gene Cernan’s passing

In a statement, Cernan’s family said he passed away on Monday following ongoing health issues. They did not give any further details.

“It is with very deep sadness that we share the loss of our beloved husband and father,” the statement said.

Before the Apollo 17 mission, Cernan had travelled into space twice – in 1966 and 1969.

A qualified naval aviator, he was selected into the third group of Nasa astronauts in 1963.

He retired in 1976, going into private business and contributing to US television channels on a variety of issues.

Cernan also produced a documentary film about his life, which he discussed at length in this BBC interview in 2014.

Born on 14 March 1934 in Chicago, his full name was Eugene Andrew Cernan.

He is survived by his wife Jan Nanna Cernan, his daughter and two step-daughters and also nine grandchildren.

His family said details regarding his funeral would be announced in the coming days.

Gene Cernan’s death comes just weeks after that of another Nasa astronaut, John Glenn.

SIGHTINGS OF UFO COURSE AT MCGILL

MARIE-FRANCE COALLIER   Montreal Gazette

Don Donderi, at his home office on Friday, teaches a class on the UFO world.

Q: How did teaching this course come about?

A: Well, I’ve been interested in the topic since I was 10 years old. I was certainly literate at 10 and I was following what was going in the papers and magazines in the United States, where I grew up.

And in 1947, there were (UFO) sightings. There was a famous sighting by a guy named Kenneth Arnold who was a private pilot who flew up in the Cascade (mountain range in Washington) and he saw and reported nine silvery objects flying over the mountains. He was very articulate in his report . … The story got into AP (Associated Press) the next day in June of 1947. And the AP headline writer coined the phrase ‘flying saucers’, which is where it all began.

Q: Wasn’t that the same year as the famous Roswell UFO incident in New Mexico?

A: It’s the same year actually, just a few weeks later. The whole Roswell thing came just after the Kenneth Arnold sighting in 1947.

Q: What’s your take on what happened at Roswell?

A: The U.S. government recovered the remains of a crashed unidentified flying object or to be more correct, an extraterrestrial vehicle.

Q: Do you believe aliens were found at the crash site?

A: It is believed that they also recovered bodies of dead aliens.

Q: Why so much silence and secrecy for all these years?

A: Well, that’s a very good question, and I raise it in my course … The technology involved is extremely advanced; the implications for human society are incredible and possibly upsetting because we are under surveillance by technologically superior beings from other planets. We don’t know how to do what they do. We don’t know what their motives are or their interests are. And at the moment, as far as I know, we don’t have any active defences or preparations to deal with the situation. So it’s obviously upsetting. Secrecy is because when governments, any government, gets hold of new technology, and want to figure out how it works, their first interest is protecting their own turf on this and not sharing it with the world.

Erectile dysfunction comes with this prescription free cialis click that page unpleasantness for men. Fortunately, medical science has taken a pfizer viagra mastercard giant leap forward in curing this nightmare called ED. The medicine that was being made for one purpose and its unintended side effect being a pleasant experience. amerikabulteni.com discount online viagra

Q: How certain are you of life beyond our planet?

A: I’m 100 per cent certain of that. The way I put it in my course and to the public is this: I have three main propositions. One, some of what people report as UFOs are extraterrestrial vehicles. That proposition, I believe, is established beyond reasonable doubt. And if you know your law, you’ll know that’s the standard for a conviction of a felony. Proposition 2 is that some of the extraterrestrial vehicles have ET crews, and proposition 3 is that some of these ET crews ‘catch and release’ humans to study them, so-called alien abductions. Proposition 2, I think, is established beyond a reasonable doubt, and proposition 3 is bound on probabilities.

Q: Do you personally know anyone who was abducted by aliens?

A: I know many people. I’d say 10, at least, who have claimed to be abducted. And in many cases, I respect their claims because I think they’re based on sound evidence.

Q: There are doubters, of course. How do you handle skepticism?

A: Listen, skepticism is absolutely OK. If you pick up my book (UFOs, ETs and alien abductions: A scientist looks at the evidence, 2013) which you probably won’t do, you’ll find I have a great deal of respect for skeptics who are doing their best to make sure what they know and what the world knows is based on reasonable sound evidence. That’s good. I’m a scientist.

Q: With the proliferation of drones, wouldn’t it be easy to fly one above Mount Royal and say, ‘Hey, look up, it’s a UFO!”

A: Exactly. One of my better friends, who is a drone user commercially — takes real estate photos for people — he and I and everyone else in the field knows it’s perfectly possible to fake UFO photographs and experiences.

Q: Have you ever seen a UFO yourself ?

A: Only the kind that wouldn’t impress anyone as sound evidence because nocturnal lights, which is a technical term, are a dime a dozen and you couldn’t be sure at a distance what it was.

Q: What are the chances of a UFO landing on Ste-Catherine St. and an alien climbing out to shake my hand?

A: (Laughing) Ah yes, the famous White House lawn landing. I have no idea; I can’t possibly tell you on the basis of anything I’ve learned on the subject. Except that … whoever shows up will go away and not come back here for a while.
