Scintillation update from Jo Walton

Scintillation Update from Jo Walton

It’s getting closer! I’m really looking forward to it now.

Scintillation membership closes next Sunday, 22nd, at midnight Montreal time. If you’ve been waiting to buy a membership, if you have friends who want to come OR if you want to convert from supporting to attending, do it before that. We mean this! We have a proper membership button on the website now. https://scintillation.ca/index.php/registration or email members@scintillation.ca with any queries. We will not do at the door registration.

And now, fun things.

There will be a pre-Scintillation reading at Argo on Ste-Catherine between Atwater and Guy on the evening of Thursday 10th October, at 7pm. Marissa Lingen, Ada Palmer, Jo Walton, A.E. Prevost and others will be reading, and it’ll be great. This will be followed by a mass visit to Juliette et Chocolat across from Argo for dessert. Argo will be doing a book table for us again, and you can pre-order books from them ahead of time and they’ll get them for you to collect at Scintillation. So if you want some codices and you want to support great local bookshops run by people who love books, you can. https://argobookshop.ca/

Friday afternoon expeditions include a tour of the old port, a trip to Jean Talon Market, a trip to the Jardin Botanique and other activities. You don’t have to decide any of them in ahead of time, you can decide at dim sum or at the last minute. But if you want to do the tea tasting with Jon Singer at Camellia Sinensis, you have to pay for it in advance using the website, where it explains how to do it https://scintillation.ca/index.php/registration

Program(me) is done, and up on the website now, including brief panel descriptions. I think it’s OK and fairly self-explanatory, but if you spot errors or want to ask anything reply to this email. This year we’re doing 60 minute panels in 75 minute slots, to give time for bathroom breaks, moving between rooms, and over-run. We’re also doing an “In Conversation” series in the reading room, which I think will be terrific. We’re having a Joy of Reading panel on Sunday morning, and we’d be delighted if you bring along readings you love to share, which must be written by somebody else, not you, and not more than 5-10 monites max. https://scintillation.ca/index.php/programme

VCON is cancelled

The kind of fan-run convention we all love is failing. We’ve known this for a long time, but when stalwarts like VCON and Ad Astra struggle with issues of failing attendance, lack of volunteers, cost of hotels, we have to wonder if the days of the fan run con are numbered.

Read the comments, too, as there is a fuller explanation there.

Also, if you are on Facebook, visit the Ad Astra group and join the discussion there.

Our computer-competent team are working hard on the website attempting to put up a button where you can buy membership and also an interface so I can edit it, because right now it’s all hand-carved HTML. (Possibly these things will happen over the holidays. We’ll see.) Meanwhile, memberships are still available by the clunky method of sending $80 via PayPal to farthingparty@gmail.com and emailing members@scintillation.ca to say you’ve done that. Many of you have done this already, we do still have memberships available at this time, we expect to be full again, but anyone with a supporting membership for 2019 can convert at any time.
