Category Archives: Corona meetings from home

Today, at 13:00h, you are invited !

All are welcome to join us!

We meet today, 17th of June, 13:00h. The invitation to Zoom will appear in the introduction post right at 13:00h.

Guest Speaker: Author Olivia Atwater

Olivia Atwater writes whimsical historical fantasy with a hint of satire. She lives in Montreal, Quebec with her fantastic, prose-inspiring husband and her two cats. She has been, at various times, a historical re-enactor, a professional witch at a metaphysical supply store, a web developer, and a vending machine repair person.

Fantasy as Satire: Though you can write a satire in just about any genre, fantasy lends itself particularly well to the idea for reasons both structural and psychological. Olivia Atwater discusses a few well-known examples of satire within the fantasy genre, and elaborates on why they succeed so well at their aims.

Joe Aspler: These are the Voyages…: There have been many fine ships named Enterprise. In this presentation, I will summarise their origins, their history, their battles, and the exploration that they carried out.

Discussions: August meeting at the Legion in Lachine, what are we reading or watching, or creating!

Raffles: Nine prizes are on offer to lucky winners!

And Keith’s SF trivia quiz!

MonSFFA meets on the 13th!

MonSFFA meets on line and on zoom on the 13th of May. All are invited to attend.  The link to the zoom invitation will be in our first post of the meeting which appears on this website right at 13:00h. Or, you can request the link by contacting <president@monsffa.ca>

There will be two presentations. Kofi will be speaking on math and magic, and Danny Sichel will speak on everyone’s favourite detective, Sherlock Holmes.

Mathematical Fiction: Is Magic just another source of Math?
Mathematical Fiction might not be popular but has been around since 1884. We will discuss how this can be relevant in many sci-fi/fantasy-based worlds and check some work on databases that keep track of it. How do we conceive such a world and what differences can we use to alter it from our world?
The Case of the Literary Archetype: It’s been almost 150 years since Arthur Conan Doyle created one of the most popular fictional characters in history. Sherlock Holmes and his associates have had an outsized impact on popular culture in many ways; how have they affected science fiction and fantasy?

January 2023 Virtual Meeting, Post 5 of 8: More Special Cameos in SF/F

This is Post 5 of 8 this afternoon.

On ZOOM at this time, we discuss and take a look at more cool cameos in SF/F film and television!

9) MORE SPECIAL CAMEOS IN SF/F FILM AND TELEVISION

This presentation, by Josée Bellemare, is mostly on ZOOM, but here are three examples for the Web Site. Enjoy!

Highway to Heaven, Halloween episode, S4-E5
I was a middle age werewolf

The episode title is a sly dig at the film I Was a Teenage Werewolf (1957) which starred Michael Landon. Clips of it are shown throughout the episode, and Mark Gordon even says “This guy looks a lot like you.”

Ghostbusters/Star Trek episode S2-Ep47
Ain’t NASA-sarily so

The Ghostbusters are sent to outer space to the space platform Galileo. They must capture a particularly scary creature, while Peter is overjoyed about working under a government contract. The space platform is named “Galileo,” a reference to the shuttlecraft Galileo from Star Trek. The character “Yeoman Whitney” is a reference to actress Grace Lee Whitney who played “Yeoman Janice Rand” in “Star Trek The Original Series.”

Meatloaf & Barry Bostwick /Glee
Rocky Horror Picture Show

Barry Bostwick and Meat Loaf, who star in the original film, appear in cameo roles in this episode.

NEWS

Regarding a move to the Atwater Library: We finally heard back from the library, and it’s not good news. They are no longer open on Saturdays, so it would cost us 500$ per meeting, which is of course out of the question.

So we are back to looking for a home.

Have you paid your dues? Please check with Joe! A lot of memberships are overdue!

NEWS

Regarding a move to the Atwater Library: The last I heard, we were to be informed in August about when we could begin renting the auditorium. I wrote to the Atwater Library again, but no response. I’ve no idea what’s going on, and I’m getting discouraged.
