4 of 7 – The Break!

It’s time for a break!

And since we are zooming pretty much the entire meeting, we really do need the break. But first, before we all disperse, Let’s celebrate for Alexis, whose birthday this is!

Happy Birthday, Alexis!

While everyone runs to the fridge and bathroom, here are a couple of announcements.

WARP: In case you missed it, WARP 109 is available for download: http://www.monsffa.ca/?page_id=6915 . Beavra and Mammothra have a new friend!

WARP 100–what a nice number!– will be edited by Danny and Val, and hopefully ready for April. They will be looking for your input!! Et oui, vous pouvez écrire en français pour WARP, alors pas d’excuses. Henceforth, submissions and LoCs should be mailed to <warp@monsffa.ca> .

MonSFFA PROGRAMMING :  We need members to consider making a presentation or volunteer to moderate a discussion. Now that we have unlimited time on zoom, there are more possibilities. Somebody could do a demo from his/her workshop for instance. We can have debates and discussions, as we did at live meetings. Instead of just posting pictures of models, costumes, and other projects, we can have actual show-and-tells.  You can reach Sylvain by clicking here: <treasurer@monsffa.ca>

At the very least, please send us your programming wish list. What would you like to see from our club in 2021?

MEMBERSHIP FEES: MonSFFA has always been (and always will be) primarily a social club, so when we had to suspend in-person meetings, we also suspended the fees. This was not a great hardship as we were also not paying for a hotel room. However, while our expenses are lower, they are not insignificant. For one thing, the fees for our website and domain name come due this year, and we have to pay for a year’s subscription to Zoom. Though WARP is only being mailed to members without Internet, it is still being printed in hopes that we will all be able to get together again someday. We have had no fundraising, none at all, not even the snack bar!

Therefore we will be asking members to start renewing their memberships as if last year never happened (I wish), starting April as our last live meeting was in March. Therefore, if your membership was due for renewal in April 2020, it is now due in April 2021.

Payment: Cheques made out to <MonSFFA> can be mailed to Sylvain whose home address is in the inside cover of WARP. We are having problems setting up a PayPal account, but we are working on it.

Participation Prizes

3 or 4 names (depends on how many become involved) will be drawn from a hat. All you have to do is be here! But we really would like you to also leave comments on our website.

MonSFFA Zooms tomorrow!

MonSFFA is Zooming along, Saturday at 13:00h.

Keith will begin with an introduction, and instructions for logging in for those who may not have used Zoom before. We always like to chat a bit before the presentation, so the first presentation will begin at 13:45. Sylvain’s topic is Getting Around.

We will have a break at 14:30, and then the draw for the participation prizes, which this time will also include a DVD of Flash Gordon and Harry Potter magic wands.

The second presentation is the second part of Joe’s Shakespearians in SF/F. ( Recently, we noted the passing of famous Shakespearian actor, Christopher Plummer, who played a Klingon in Undiscovered Country.)

Sylvain will follow this with a neat round up of gems found on the Internet, and Keith will take care of the conclusion.

Nice drops out of Worldcon 2023 race.

Sadly, the city of Nice, France, has announced that it is dropping its candidacy as host for the 2023 Worldcon.  Citing the major socio-economical disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, they hope to be able to return at a future date.

2020/7/25
After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to postpone our bid for hosting the 2023 World Science Fiction Convention in Nice, France.

The impacts of COVID-19 are extensive and have far reaching consequences, as various industries and sectors are affected by the aftermath of the pandemic. Our daily lives, employments and businesses are severely disrupted, and we find ourselves unable to keep the 2023 target.
This has been and still is a challenging time for everyone, and we want to thank you all for your support, open discussions, understanding and encouragement.
We’re genuinely upset and disappointed, but we fully intend to host the WSFC later in time. We will be working to finalize the details and will share more information about our plans in the coming months.

Post 4 of 6: June 6 DIY Virtual MonSFFA Meeting

In a future that we hope near, there will be museums devoted to the Covid-19 Pandemic.  Not to glorify it, but to show our descendants how we lived through those difficult times.

The Art section will probably result in a lot of puzzled faces.

The Covid blues

These are difficult times, and since nearly all our members are in the Montreal area, we are not untouched by the pandemic. Even as we use laughter to deal with the fear and anxiety we all feel, we must also remember that some of our own are struggling with illness and personal tragedy.

Stay strong, stay safe, keep in touch.

Cathy
