Meet the new companion!

Her name is Bill and she has never met Daleks before.

I don’t know whatever possessed the Beeb to announce the new companion during an FA cup semi-final, but it is England, and one of the teams was Man United.  Man United won in overtime, which is all that mattered to some in this household.

BBC One today announced Pearl Mackie will join the Doctor Who cast as the Doctor’s new companion. Pearl was exclusively revealed to audiences on BBC One during half time of the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday 23rd August.

On joining the cast in her first major television role, Pearl said: “I’m incredibly excited to be joining the Doctor Who family. It’s such an extraordinary British institution, I couldn’t be prouder to call the TARDIS my home!

Peter Capaldi is such a brilliant actor, and his Doctor is such a wacky and wonderful character, I can’t wait to see what adventures are in store for him and Bill throughout time and space. Reading the script at the audition I thought Bill was wicked. Fantastically written, cool, strong, sharp, a little bit vulnerable with a bit of geekiness thrown in – I can’t wait to bring her to life, and to see how she develops through the series.

In the grand tradition of Gratuitous Lists, here’s a look at the twenty Best Science Fiction TV Shows of All Time (that I can think of today). The list is in alphabetical order, not order of quality, nor is there a #1 choice as I’d probably have a totally different choice tomorrow. So rather than argue about arbritary placements on the list, you can instead yell at me at what got left off.

In case you’re wondering, the list contains only overtly science fictional TV shows. No fantasy (that’d be another, different list) and no anime, as I’m not well-enough versed in the field. After some debate, also no superhero stuff as the SF credentials of those shows can vary wildly and there’s enough of them now to make for another list.

Dr Who News

Brian Blessed, of “Gordon’s Alive” fame expressed an interest in playing the next Doctor. Not sure if he said it first, or if he was responding to a question. If a reporter asked if the role would interest him, he would hardly say, oh, hell, no, lousy show.

He had a role in Doctor Who years back as a barbarian who married Peri, Colin Baker’s companion. He also played two different roles in Blake’s 7. He’s 79, now, and has a pace-maker.

Apparently, he had been asked to consider following William Hartnell. It might have worked then, but with the possible exception of Colin Baker, none of the Doctors since was as flamboyant as Brian Blessed. It would have taken the Doctor in a whole new direction!

Sackhoff has been on a bit of a tear lately. While she currently appears on the A&E crime drama Longmire, her last project, the dark Power/Rangers online short, went viral earlier this year. Last year, she starred in Oculus, which performed well with critics and at the box office. Wherever the series lands, hopefully it’ll be a show worth following.

writer/director Nicholas Meyer joins CBS’ new Star Trek TV show

Star Trek fans of every shade just received the best news: writer/director Nicholas Meyer is joining CBS’ new Star Trek television show, which is set to debut in 2017 with Bryan Fuller producing.

Why don’t they make what I want to see?

This is the title to a panel discussion scheduled for the October MonSFFA meeting.

I know it’s still a long way to October, but I saw this list of novels and short stories being made into movies & TV shows and thought it a perfect kick-off to this discussion. I seriously wonder if some of these are even possible–The Wheel of Time? Even with all the advances in medical science, I doubt I would live long enough to see the whole series.

I notice the same names cropping up over and over–Gaiman, Martin, Williams, King, for instance. They have proven track records.

Anyway, take a look at this listing, and do comment on what you think you would like to see, or not see.

Steven Moffatt leaves the TARDIS

I have been hearing for awhile now that Steven Moffatt was leaving Dr Who. According to Radio Times, he is indeed leaving the show. Chris Chibnall who worked on Broadchurch and Torchwood is taking over. However, the bad news side of things is that there will be no Dr Who in 2016 except the Christmas special.  I hope we enjoy the OVMF concert on the 30th; unless Space does a marathon, 2016 is going to be a very lonely place for the timey-whimy fans.

…BBC1 has decided to air Moffat’s final 12-part series – the 10th of the modern era – in spring 2017. Chibnall’s debut series as head writer and executive producer will launch in 2018. ..
