Meanwhile, in Odessa, people dressed as Chewbacca and Stormtroopers from Star Wars attend the unveiling of the Darth Vader monument in Odessa on Friday. The monument, built around a bronze Lenin statue, which would have been torn down as part of Ukraine’s de-communisation legislation.  Darth Vader says that he is happy to be made into a monument while ‘still alive’.  Watch the video here,

palpatineA candidate who dresses as Star Wars villain Emperor Palpatine has been voted on to a Ukrainian city council despite standing as a joke. According to fellow candidate Aleksandr Borovik, the man posing as Sheev Palpatine, the Emperor of the Galactic Empire, won a place on Odessa City Council, in the south west of the country. It comes after the local electoral commission revealed that 48 candidates from the Darth Vader Block political party were registered to stand in the local election.  Emperor Palatine won 54.4 per cent of the poll. Mr Borovik, was heard to say, “This is beyond my understanding. People, what’s wrong with you?’

ChewyChewbacca was arrested while campaigning for Darth Vader on election day. Canvassing on the day of polls in Ukraine is banned. He was fined about 10$, but refused to pay, saying that his “funds are in an intergalactic bank that has no branches on this planet.” He also had his lightsaber and laser gun confiscated.

Video footage from the arrest showed a growling Chewbacca resisting four law enforcement officers, who were forced to pin him down on the hood of a van to handcuff him.

Sasquan, the 73rd World Con

I failed the tech again! This was supposed to appear on the 19th. –Cathy, spending too much of the con in the business meetings.

Sasquan, the 73rd World Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention begins today.

http://sasquan.org/

The biggest news story is the kerfuffle around the Hugo Awards. A record-breaking 5 950 votes were cast for the Hugos.

Attending (all types): 1874, Supporting: 4076

This year, the number of supporting memberships to Sasquan surpassed the number of attending, and nearly all of them voted. BUT are supporting the Puppies, or making a point of voting “no award?” Some pundits are predicting “no award” taking at least one of the categories. Time will tell. The Hugo ceremony will be broadcast live on Sunday.

The 5,950 total surpasses the vote total record for previous years (3,587 ballots, set by Loncon in 2014) by more than 65%.

More than 57% of the convention members eligible to vote cast ballots this year, making this the highest level of participation in Hugo Awards voting in the past decade.

Sasquan will stream the Hugo Awards ceremony live and free of charge at http://www.ustream.tv/hugoawards . There will also be a text stream available on the Hugo Awards webpage at http://www.thehugoawards.org.

Pool Party and BBQ in the Park–Please RSVP!

Where are the goldfish shoals?

If you are planning to attend Wayne’s Pool party, July 11th, please contact him ASAP, <wayneglover915@yahoo.ca> The event does necessitate some planning, purchasing of supplies, the making of mom’s fabulous potato salad, etc, so if Wayne does not hear from you, it will be cancelled.

The BBQ in the park on July 19th is facing the same dilemma–no response save for one who sent his regrets.  We need some idea of numbers in order to plan.  Please contact <cathypl@sympatico.ca> if you are planning to attend.  This event is open to everyone in Montreal fandom!

Details on both events can be found here:  http://www.monsffa.ca/?p=1215

Fun, Fun, Fun, in the sun, sun, sun!

We have two summer events coming up, the annual BBQ in the park, and the annual pool party.  (For pictures of past events, Click the WARP tab above)

The Pool Party is at Wayne Glover’s home in St-Eustache, July 11th, P1000483anytime after noon. Wayne has an in-ground pool, and a BBQ. Bring your meat, pool toys, and so on.
For directions to his place, <wayneglover915@yahoo.ca>

The BBQ will be at Angrignon Park, July 19, gathering to start about 10AM. There is lots of parking, (for a fee) and it is dead easy to get IMGP7142 LRthere by Metro. You just walk out the door of Angrignon Metro station and follow the path to the noisy group. Bring the usual: chairs, drinks, something to share, meat for the grill, toys, etc.
If you can bring a portable BBQ, please let me know ASAP.

Neither of these is exclusive to MonSFFA members, bring your friends! 🙂

KAG is back! Let the recruiting begin…

General Botaq Zantai bir JablU, commander of the Rising Sun Fleet, reportingBotaq

Let’s take this back a ways. About a year ago, I reconnected with an old friend from back in my days as a member of the Klingon Assault Group (KAG). John Halvorson, the founder of the international fan club base on the Klingon race featured in Star Trek and I hadn’t communicated in many years. Suddenly because of Facebook, we were chatting about old times off and on.
As time rolled on another old friend surfaced. John Gannon, the founder of KAG in Canada and I made contact and again began talking about old times. Before we knew it the three of us were talking regularly.
One thing lead to another and while KAG existed in Ontario, it had pretty much disappeared from the rest of the country. It was then that John Gannon and I decided to get back into active fandom. John based in British Columbia and myself in Quebec, we found ourselves well situated to begin building the club at each end of the country.
Here in the east, I began by contacting the old crew from the eastern townships chapter of the club. In KAG, chapters are called ships and the one around here is called IKV Harfang.

With 6 members back on board, it was time to make connection from here to the Atlantic Ocean. One by one, I began to reach out to current and former members as well as new members that had applied to the KAG.org web site. That was in April 2015. We now have chapters in every province here in the east aside from Prince Edward Island ( and we’re working on that!)

KAG chapters are planning for events many events across the country.

risingSun12The fleet in eastern Canada is call the Rising Sun Fleet. The fleet consist of the IKV Harfang, IKV Rising Phoenix, the IKV Blood Stone, the IKV Grey Angel and the IKV Ice Storm.

In Montreal, the IKV Rising Phoenix under the command of David Legault, now has a good core of member but they are looking for more to join them.

In the past KAG has been in countless parades in and around Montreal as well as making our presence known at conventions and other fundraisers! We are looking to take up our banner again!
If you have what it takes to be part of a fun group of science fiction fans, here’s your chance to strut with the confidence of a Klingon. For more info, I can be contacted easily through Facebook or you can simply go to http://www.kag.org and fill out an application. I will contact you as soon as possible.

Today is national science fiction day

National Science Fiction Day
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

National Science Fiction Day is unofficially celebrated by many science fiction fans in the United States on January 2, a date that was chosen to correspond with the official birthdate of famed science fiction writer Isaac Asimov.[1]

While not an official holiday of any sort (in the sense that it is not recognized or declared by any government), National Science Fiction Day is given some degree of credence by its recognition by organizations such as the Hallmark Channel and by the Scholastic Corporation.
