Lots more information about our Vancouver hotel, Vancouver itself, the FAAN Awards, and our auction. Nic Farey will be publishing The Incompleat Register (including a ballot), and this should be available through efanzines.com this week. Remember that you do not need to be a Corflu member to vote.

Incompleat2021

Happy New Year everyone!

Attached is The Incompleat Register 2021, your voters’ guide and pro forma ballot for the 2022 Fanzine Activity Achievement (FAAn) awards.

The usual caveat applies that the fanzine listings within are not definitive as to what you can or cannot vote for, but proper categorization will be required.

As always I encourage faneds and other news purveyors receiving this to promote the awards and link to, forward or reproduce the ballot and instructions. TIR 2021 should be up at efanzines.com at some time tomorrow. Anybody with an interest in fanzines is encouraged to vote, no memberships or fees are required.

The closing date to receive ballots is midnight Pacific time, Friday February 25 2022. The awards winners will be announced at Corflu Pangloss in Vancouver, BC on March 20, 2022.

Good arrers!

Nic Farey

Please note the following important correction: ‘Origin’ (ed John Thiel) should be categorized as a genzine and not a perzine.

Star Wars épisode V: l’Empire contre attaque – En ciné-concert

WisCon Needs Help

Picked up from SMOF news:

WisCon Needs Help

WisCon is a feminist science fiction convention dating to 1977, held every year in Madison, Wisconsin (excepting an online event in 2020). It is the latest convention to appeal to the fannish public to help it continue past 2021.

Treasurer Kit Stubbs lays out the problems in a blog post here. First, SF3, the organization behind WisCon, faces a shortfall of at least $76,000, more if the 2022 convention doesn’t fill its room block. Second, it has an even more drastic shortfall of volunteers to help run the convention. Third, it is attempting to do more work lately:

WisCon’s roots are grounded in white feminism, and WisCon continues to struggle with racism and with finding ways to center attendees of color who have been harmed. The Town Hall marks a key point in our antiracist work to bring WisCon, particularly as experienced by our attendees and volunteers of color, into better alignment with our valueseven if this means that white attendees will have to sit with discomfort.

Working towards a more antiracist con is just one of the major challenges that we face. Unless we, the WisCon community, also take significant action this year in terms of finances and our volunteer pool, within the next few years we will no longer be able to run WisCon.

SF3 is accepting donations via PayPal, but would also be just as happy if people could register for WisCon and buy tickets to its bonus fundraising event.

Details on some volunteer positions, including expected time commitment, are in a previous blog post. Stubbs also encourages interested parties to attend WisCon’s upcoming online volunteer info session.

Tone Madison has more background and further information, along with a sampling of reaction from the WisCon community. The initial response has been encouraging, but there is a long way to go:

Some larger donors have stepped up to offer $15,000 in matching funds, Stubbs says. As of Monday night, about $3,500 in other donations had come in toward the match, and 21 new volunteers had signed up.

Masquerade/Cosplay at ConAdian

From Kevin Standlee, video of the masquerade at ConAdian, the World Con in Winnipeg which many MonSFFen attended.  It was recorded by Sylvain St-Pierre.  –CPL

Lisa Hayes found the VHS video tape of the 1994 Worldcon Masquerade buried in one of my many boxes, digitized it, and I’ve uploaded it to the Worldcon Events YouTube channel.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wiHBpVlagEk&pp=sAQA

Unfortunately, the last part of the credits didn’t make it onto the 2 hour VHS tape. Also, due to YouTube copyright reasons, there is at least one entry that has its sound muted.

Feel free to pass this on to anyone you think might be interested in this piece of Worldcon and costuming history.

Co-Chair Message – Can*Con 2021

Can*Con in Ottawa is postponed to 2022. Letter from the chairs follows. –CPL

Co-Chair Message – Can*Con 2021

Greetings! Important update from the Can*Con command deck, looking ahead to the rest of this year and beyond.

First, though, we want to take a moment to thank our amazing volunteers. Over the past year, they’ve been hosting mini events to educate and entertain, and bring the community together. So please join us in thanking our Can*Con*Line team: Brandon Crilly, Erin Rockfort, Marco Cultrera, Evan May, Cortni Fernandez, Phoebe Barton, Millie Ho, Jaggy Sue, and David Demchuk. And a big thank you to our panelists and moderators, as well!

Now, let’s discuss the future. We said at the beginning of the year that we would look at the odds of being able to pull off a successful, safe and inclusive Can*Con 2021. Between slow vaccine roll-outs and the fact that, well, pandemic is exhausting and we want to respect everyone’s bandwidth, we’ve made the difficult decision to not host Can*Con this year, in either an in-person or virtual format. We want to get back together with everyone so much, but it’s important to do so when it’s safe and everyone can attend. That will have to wait a while longer, unfortunately.

We will still be hosting the Aurora Awards in the fall, which we’re super excited for! More news on that later.

Also, out of respect for our volunteers’ time, energy, and awesomeness, we’ve decided that our next amazing event (“Writing the Family” on May 27th!) will be our final one for this year, with the exception of the Auroras. A panel focusing on family is a lovely note to end on, at least for now. We’ll focus instead on putting together an unforgettable live con in 2022!

Mark your calendars now for Can*Con 2022: October 14-16.

Thanks again for making the past year fun. Stay safe, stay healthy, and we look forward to seeing you in the future.

Warm regards,

Marie and Derek

Scintillation Cancelled

Scintillation, which was to have been held in Montreal October this year, has been cancelled.  While there is great progress being made in fighting the pandemic, there are still too many uncertainties regarding the feasibility of holding an event in October.

The convention is now tentatively scheduled for Thanksgiving of next year, October 7-9th, 2022.
