On the 3rd of December, Japan’s Hayabasa 2 spacecraft, on a six year mission to catch and sample an asteroid, will fly past Earth. Earth’s gravity will slingshot the spacecraft toward its target, 162173 Ryugu, which Hayabasa 2 is expected to reach in July 2018. The shockwave rattled Earth’s magnetic field and caused electrical currents to flow through the ground of Norway’s Lofoten islands.  A full-fledged geomagnetic storm did not erupt, and few auroras have been reported. Why was the CME so ineffective? Its internal magnetic field did not connect to Earth’s magnetic field; the mismatch mitigated the CME’s impact.

MORNING SKY SHOW:  Set your alarm for dawn. Venus, Jupiter and Mars are gathering for a three-way close encounter in the early morning sky. Sky maps and observing tips are available on today’s edition of  http://spaceweather.com

From Oct. 25th to Oct. 29th Venus, Jupiter and Mars will fit together inside a circle only 5o wide (sky maps: #1, #2, #3, #4, #5). Super-bright Venus and Jupiter are visible even after the black pre-dawn sky turns cobalt blue. Once you find them, you will have little trouble locating the dimmer red planet Mars.

The CME is not heading directly for Earth. Nevertheless, it does have an Earth-directed component. NOAA forecast models suggest that the cloud will deliver a glancing blow to our planet’s magnetic field on Oct. 25th. There is a 50% chance of G1-class geomagnetic storms when it arrives, so watch for potential auroras on the weekend.  More information, including video of the flare: http://spaceweather.com/

Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs) are space rocks larger than approximately 100m that can come closer to Earth than 0.05 AU. None of the known PHAs is on a collision course with our planet, although astronomers are finding new ones all the time. On October 23, 2015 there were 1630 potentially hazardous asteroids.

The ESA’s Rosetta has been sending home images of comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko, AKA the Rubber Ducky. The odd shape of the comet was quite a surprise to scientists, and a hurdle for the landing of Philae.

Such wholesale extension might have occurred, the New Horizons team speculates, if Charon once had an interior ocean of water that expanded as it froze long ago. The overlying crust would have cracked wide open to accommodate the increased volume.

Lunar Eclipse Sept 27

What’s so special about this lunar eclipse?

Not much, for astronomers, but  for the rest of us it promises a fine spectacle with a cool WOW factor. Usually, an eclipsed moon  appears blood red, but depending on the pollution in the atmosphere, the moon may appear brownish, or even bluish-grey.

Telescopes are not necessary, but binoculars will bring out a lot of detail as the shadow of the earth passes over the craters.

The moon is at perigee, so it will appear slightly larger than usual, it’s the Harvest Moon, and because of optical illusion, it appears even larger on the horizon as it rises. You will not notice much difference from one night to the next, but from Apogee to Perigee, the difference is dramatic.

The Sept. 27 event is therefore being called a “supermoon eclipse.” The last such eclipse happened in 1982, and the next won’t occur until 2033.

This eclipse is the last of the current Tetrad, a series of 4 eclipses, each pair separated by 6 months.

In Montreal, we get to see the whole celestial show , just a little over 5 hours.
