Illustrating Batman – 80 years of comics and pop culture

The Society of illustrators / Museum of Illustration
Have an exhibition on the illustrations and collectables for the comic book hero Batman. The Museum of illustration exhibits (3 different exhibits) are spread out over 4 floors of the building. Starting from the late 1930’s to modern times we witness the evolution of Batman. Original artworks and cartoons are hanging off the walls displayed by different time periods ( or evolution periods) of the hero. We can see this over the different decades, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and of course the 60’s evolution from the tv series. The more recent decades are also covered in the exhibition.

Than there is the Chip Kidds obsessive collection of Batman material also on display. This includes the limited editions (2006 & 2013) Batman Black & White sketch covers commissioned by Chip Kidd.

The third exhibition is the original artwork of Japanese Bat-Manga! The artwork by illustrator Jairo Kuwata brings a completely different outlook on the comic book hero. This is the first time that a a substantial portion of the original artwork has been shown in North America.

Over all I spent about 90 mins going throughout the 4 different levels of the museum. The staff was helpful and happy to help out. They do serve meals at the restaurant (Tues-Sat) starting at 11:00
Entrance price was a reasonable $15us and a gift shop is available too on the ground floor. The museum open at 11am. The museum is located at 128 East 63rd Street in New York City

Look for Batman in Montreal!

Saturday is Batman Day!

In Montreal, the famed Bat Signal will be projected onto the wall of Place Dupuis to mark the 80th anniversary of the first appearance of Batman in the comics.

From the Montreal Gazette:

On Saturday night, the Bat-Signal will be projected on to the St-Hubert St. wall of the Place Dupuis office complex as part of worldwide celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the introduction of Batman as a comic-book hero.

The masked crime-fighter first appeared in a DC Comics publication in May 1939. Saturday is Batman Day. Place Dupuis is home to the offices of WB Games Montréal, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The Montreal studio produced the 2013 game Batman: Arkham Origins.

The famous image of a bat in a spotlight will be showcased on the wall from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday and will be visible from Place Émilie-Gamelin.

“We are Warner and we work closely with DC Comics, so we wanted to be part of this,” said Stéphane Roy, head of WB Games Montréal. “Batman is a DC franchise but it belongs to the popular culture. We also will be projecting (the Bat-Signal) on Place Dupuis and that’s where the studio is based so it’s also kind of a clin d’oeil to our employees.”

THE EVOLUTION OF BATMAN

Tim Burton’s film about crime fighter changed the superhero landscape

WARNER BROS. Tim Burton’s Batman, which starred Michael Keaton, turns 30 this year and Warner Bros. has announced a new franchise beginning in the summer of 2021.

Michael E. Uslan was a wideeyed, 28-year-old comics fan when he improbably scooped up the film rights to a character Hollywood had kicked to the curb. Brimming with belief, he bought Batman. Problem was, no one else in town was buying.

It was the late ’70s, the era of The Deer Hunter and Apocalypse Now, when Uslan, a comics scholar turned aspiring producer, pitched the major studios on his idea for a Bat-project. He was met with rejection after rejection. One industry executive told him Batman was “as dead as the dodo.”

“It can’t be comprehended today,” Uslan says. “There was no respect for superheroes or their creators.”

The film industry, like much of society at large, still viewed comic books as simply kid stuff. But Uslan saw a path forward: “If we do it as a dark and serious movie, it will almost be like a brand new form of entertainment.”

Bronx Street to be Renamed After Batman Co-Creator

HONOR IN GOTHAM. Welcome2TheBronx says a street will be given the name of Batman’s co-creator: “Recognition At Last! Bronx Street to be Renamed After Batman Co-Creator Bill Finger”.

On December 8th, late Bronxite and DeWitt Clinton alumni Bill Finger and co-creator of Batman will have justice with a Bronx street renamed after him.

For years, many only knew Bob Kane as the creator of Batman but it was actually Bill Finger who gave Bob Kane not only the idea of how Batman should look but also created his origin story and wrote many of the stories during the beginning of the rise of the Dark Knight.

Born Milton Finger in Denver, Colorado on February 8, 1914, eventually he and his family moved to The Bronx where he was raised and went to DeWitt Clinton High School (where Bob Kane went as well).

Kane was trying to come up with a character to compete with the craze created by Superman but was stuck in a rut when he asked Bill Finger for some advice. The two would meet up at Poe Park on the Grand Concourse to come up with ideas and it was Finger who told him to change his costume into what became the Batman we know

Adam West has passed away

Posted by Variety, June 10, 2017 | 08:19AM PT

Adam West — an actor defined and also constrained by his role in the 1960s series “Batman” — died Friday night in Los Angeles. He was 88. A rep said that he died after a short battle with leukemia.

“Our dad always saw himself as The Bright Knight, and aspired to make a positive impact on his fans’ lives. He was and always will be our hero,” his family said in a statement.

With its “Wham! Pow!” onscreen exclamations, flamboyant villains and cheeky tone, “Batman” became a surprise hit with its premiere on ABC in 1966, a virtual symbol of ’60s kitsch. Yet West’s portrayal of the superhero and his alter ego, Bruce Wayne, ultimately made it hard for him to get other roles, and while he continued to work throughout his career, options remained limited because of his association with the character.
