4 of 7 – The Break

It’s time for a break!

And since we are zooming pretty much the entire meeting, we really do need the break.

While everyone runs to the fridge and bathroom, here are a couple of announcements.

WARP 109 is about half done–I cannot do more without your input, and I am determined that it will be on line this month, so it might be a short issue. What I really need now are reviews. Given the time we have been spending at home, I find it hard to believe that no one has read a book or watched a TV show or movie. Et oui, vous pouvez écrire en français pour WARP, alors pas d’excuses.

MEMBERSHIP FEES: MonSFFA has always been (and always will be) primarily a social club, so when we had to suspend in-person meetings, we also suspended the fees. This was not a great hardship as we were also not paying for a hotel room. However, while our expenses are lower, they are not insignificant. For one thing, the fees for our website and domain name come due this year, and we have to pay for a year’s subscription to Zoom. Though WARP is only being mailed to members without Internet, it is still being printed in hopes that we will all be able to get together again someday. We have had no fundraising, none at all, not even the snack bar!

Therefore we will be asking members to start renewing their memberships as if last year never happened (I wish), starting April as our last live meeting was in March. Therefore, if your membership was due for renewal in April 2020, it is now due in April 2021.

MonSFFA PROGRAMMING :  We need members to consider making a presentation or volunteer to moderate a discussion. Now that we have unlimited time on zoom, there are more possibilities. Somebody could do a demo from his/her workshop for instance. We have members (naming on names here) who collect model kits–why not schedule some time to show off the boxes?

At the very least, please send us your programming wish list as we would normally be discussing the year’s programming this month anyway. What would you like to see from our club in 2021?

Announcements: An SOS from our programmer

For the last seven months, a handful of us have managed to keep MonSFFA alive by going virtual.  And we’ve done a darn good job, even if we say so ourselves.

BUT WE ARE GETTING EXHAUSTED!

Our live meetings used to have a rotation of presenters, with the same people rarely having to host a panel more than three or four time in a whole year.  There were breaks, too, with outings, parties and book sales.  Not so anymore; the six of us have been spitting out presentations, games and galleries nonstop since last April!  And it looks very much like we will have to stay virtual for several months to come…

WON’T YOU HELP?

We do not ask for much; just a bit of material suitable to fill half an hour of time will do nicely.  It can be a short history of a TV show, a short lecture on astronomy or some other genre-related topic.

Do not worry about the wrapping, we can help you frame your content nicely by providing PowerPoint or KeyNote backgrounds, formatting and conversion into slides.  We just need some content to get things started.

Pretty please, with chocolate on it?

Sylvain’s Spaceships

Did you ever doodle when you were a teenager?  I know I did, but not quite in the usual mundane way.  My fun was to create whole fleets of spaceships from different star-faring civilizations and come up with all sorts of interactions between them.  Hey, I am a geek!

I rarely throw things away, and recently found a bunch of my drawings from the late-60s and early-70s.  Here they are, in all their slightly yellowed splendour.  –Sylvain
