Petition to have the last season of GoT rewritten

Not likely to happen, LOL, but fun to watch the counter climb. People are REALLY hating the final season!–CPL

Remake Game of Thrones Season 8 with competent writers.

English | Spanish | Russian | French

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on.

This series deserves a final season that makes sense.

Subvert my expectations and make it happen, HBO!

Batman & GoT in the news

Three stories appeared in today’s Montreal Gazette which are of interest to fandom:

  • The Evolution of Batman
  • Overreaction to casting of Pattinson may be premature, given Keaton history
  • Thrones actor no longer strongest man

THE EVOLUTION OF BATMAN

Tim Burton’s film about crime fighter changed the superhero landscape

WARNER BROS. Tim Burton’s Batman, which starred Michael Keaton, turns 30 this year and Warner Bros. has announced a new franchise beginning in the summer of 2021.

Michael E. Uslan was a wideeyed, 28-year-old comics fan when he improbably scooped up the film rights to a character Hollywood had kicked to the curb. Brimming with belief, he bought Batman. Problem was, no one else in town was buying.

It was the late ’70s, the era of The Deer Hunter and Apocalypse Now, when Uslan, a comics scholar turned aspiring producer, pitched the major studios on his idea for a Bat-project. He was met with rejection after rejection. One industry executive told him Batman was “as dead as the dodo.”

“It can’t be comprehended today,” Uslan says. “There was no respect for superheroes or their creators.”

The film industry, like much of society at large, still viewed comic books as simply kid stuff. But Uslan saw a path forward: “If we do it as a dark and serious movie, it will almost be like a brand new form of entertainment.”

FAN MERCH YOU’ VE‘ GOT’ TO GET

Personally, I think this concept would work better as Christmas tree ornaments than as candles. Check the GoT shop here.  –cpl

FAN MERCH YOU’ VE‘ GoT’ TO GET

Game of Thrones may have aired its series finale, but the HBO show’s fandom is still going strong (disgruntled viewers of season 8 notwithstanding). To wit, the network is offering officially licensed Game of Thrones Dragon Egg Candles to keep the fantasy alive.

A set of three unscented candles costs US$26.95 and comes complete with a simulated scaly exterior that resembles the petrified dragon eggs owned by Daenerys Targaryen. Each candle measures about 6 cm x 8.5 cm.

The HBO website also features official mugs, fleece blankets, throw pillows. GoT aprons, cake moulds and ice trays.

And even though it’s summer, holiday ornaments are also for sale, including one depicting Daenerys riding Drogon (US$24.95) and another sculpted like the Night King (US$19.95).

2. The Throne of Knives, (also forks and spoons): About 300 forks, knives and spoons are separated each day from the food remains of the Uppsala populace, by their local biogas plant. In order to, in a fun way, show how important it is to sort properly, Uppsala water has built a magnificent cutlery throne.

The cutlery throne consists of about 4,000 pieces of cutlery which corresponds to two weeks of cleaning. The cutlery has been washed and then welded together. The throne weighs  about120 kg.  About  3,5 tons of cutlery is sorted out from the waste every year,  which means around 100 000 pieces. CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE THRONE

Creators of languages Peterson & Okrand in Montreal

This could be a very interesting event, and not only because languages from Star Trek and GoT will be highlighted.

…languages in video games, and many topics in between, including developing a language course to sign languages.
August 23 – 25, 2019 at University of Montreal, Pavillon Lionel-Groulx, 3150, rue Jean-Brillant, Montréal.

We are delighted to tell you that the keynotes speakers this year will be linguists David J. Peterson, creator among other things of the fictional languages used in the popular TV series, Game of Thrones, and Marc Okrand, known in particular for being the creator of the Klingon language of the famous Star Trek franchise, who will present together during a special night on Friday, August 23rd. They will each present a workshop of the languages they have created over the weekend also.

Other topics discussed at LangFest 2019 will range from minority Francophone communities in Canada to languages in video games, and many topics in between, including developing a language course to sign languages. Language workshops, highly popular during previous instalments, will also be back, allowing participants to get acquainted with South Africa’s Xhosa language, western India’s Gujarati or even Esperanto, among other languages.

We hope you are looking forward to LangFest 2019 as much as we are! Stay tuned, more info will be released on our website.

Thanks to File 770 for these bits of news

  1.  World Con 75 videos
  2.   Brad Walsh, the new companion to the Doctor?
  3.  Australian city names streets after GoT characters
  4.   Actor Jay Thomas (1948-2017) died August 24.

1.  Couldn’t go to World Con in Helsinki? Or, like me, couldn’t get into the room? First shock of the con was not being able to watch the opening ceremony because the room only held a couple of hundred! It seems the opening ceremony, the masquerade,  and several main event panels are on YouTube.  But no Hugo ceremony? How did that get missed? https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCT_U7RhKFr-If4pusZY6g8A/videos

2.  I have not yet seen confirmation, but some news sources are reporting that Brad Walsh is the new companion for the Doctor.

3.    A street too far?

The developer of Charlemont Rise at Geelong in Victoria said he had been forced to change the name of Lannaster Road because of the link to the incestuous Lannister siblings from Game of Thrones.

“The name was knocked back by the developers next door because of the relationship between the Lannister brother and sister on the show,” said the project manager, Gary Smith. “I even changed the spelling to make it not as obvious.” Lannaster Road will henceforth be known as Precinct Road.

There have been no complaints about the other street names in the estate, more than a dozen of which were inspired by the show, Smith said. Among the names are Stannis, Winterfell, Greyjoy, Baelish and Tywin.

The most popular, however, is Snow Street – named after the fan-favourite Jon Snow. “The only big mistake we’ve made was naming a small street Snow Street. We thought Jon Snow was going to be dead but then he came back to life in the next season,” Smith said. “He’s everybody’s favourite – we should’ve given him a large avenue.”

4. Actor Jay Thomas (1948-2017) died August 24.His genre work included 20 episodes of Mork and Mindy, 6 episodes of Hercules, voicing an episode of Batman: The Animated Series, and The Santa Clause 2 and 3.
