Saturday, November 17, is the date of our next downtown meeting; read all about it in this issue of Impulse! We invite our members, friends, family, and all Montreal area fandom to join us for our annual Holiday Feast, which will happen on December 9th,18:00h, at the Irish Embassy Pub and Grill, http://www.irish-embassy.com/ , 1234 Bishop, just below Ste-Catherine.

The holiday menu is now confirmed with the pub and will feature a choice of salad or soup, brownie or apple cake, and a choice of one of these main dishes:

  • Recently, people have been particularly conscious of the lack of diversity in fandom.  No women were nominated for the BD awards, the Oscars are lily-white, and the Puppies are barking at the Hugos–again!  Sometimes it seems frivolous, but now and then we have to stop and think, as for instance this article which appeared yesterday in the Montreal Gazette. Those graphs showing the difference in male/female roles in Disney Princess movies are scary, especially when you realize this is what might be shaping the future of our daughters.

The MonSFFA Holiday Feast

097The annual MonSFFA holiday feast was a huge success.  The food was excellent, as was the service.  It was noisy, though, since there was a hockey game on. (Of course, there was!!)

Keith did a fabulous job on the raffle prizes this year. They were all individually wrapped, and winners had to pick from the pile, so no one knew quite what they were getting. I don’t remember all the winners, but Josée won a jigsaw puzzle that will be 6 feet long when finished–if she ever finishes it!– and Mark Nadeau won a collection of Enterprise pins by the TWPG, one of only ten made. Sylvain won a novel, Krampus, which has just been released as a movie.  The  Fernster went home with David Brin’s Existence.

We were delighted to have our ex-President, Bernard Reischl, and his lady, Stephanie, in attendance as well.
